Meet Jacob Lindsley
Dr. Lindsley is a psychologist and minister in the Tibetan tradition. His work spans decades of service in the Buddhist non-profit world, contemplative education institutions, and universities.
Growing up in a small California farming town to self-described "hippie" parents, Jacob sought spirituality early to help heal his world during struggles with debilitating chronic illness. After some time working within the Western Esoteric tradition, he learned Buddhist practice from visiting monks and scholars in the Tibetan tradition of the Dalai Lama and Lama Zopa Rinpoche at centers in the Santa Cruz Bay Area, including years living in retreat.
He traveled to Los Angeles, California and University of the West to study psychology and contemplative studies with international monastics and scholars working in the legacy of the Humanistic Buddhist tradition of Fo Guang Shan and Master Hsing Yun, earning a bachelor's degree.
He moved to Portland, Oregon to work directly with Tibetan scholars at Maitripa College honing his understanding of Buddhist philosophy, practice, and learning how to translate Tibetan Language, earning a master's degree in Buddhist Studies.
He worked with clinical neuroscientists at Oregon Health and Science University to get experience in scientific methodology and eventually pursued his own research program on the psychology of meditation at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR, where he completed his PhD.
Jacob was ordained as a Buddhist minister by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, regularly teaches at the Marigold Contemplative Center as part of Oregon State's Contemplative Studies Initiative, serves as a committee chair for the International Society for Contemplative Research, and as a member of the Buddhist Coalition for Democracy.
He loves games, music, martial arts, archery, cooking, and nature.
Dr. Lindsley is passionate about the use of meditation practices to improve cognitive abilities, emotional balance, empathy and compassion, and wisdom about the nature of life and experience.
He loves to think interdisciplinarily and cross-culturally and would love to hear from you and perhaps even work together to make the world a better place.
